Guest Editorial: Knoxville Business Leader Supports Wamp Over Haslam

Posted Saturday, July 31st, 2010 by Zach Wamp for Governor

Guest Editorial in the Knoxville News Sentinel by Bill Baxter, Chairman of Holston Gases Inc.

Over the last 20 years, I’ve had the chance to get to know U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp very well, both during my time in the private sector, running my family’s business, and during my time in public service, as the commissioner of economic development for Tennessee and as a director of the Tennessee Valley Authority, serving as its last full time chairman.

During these same years, I’ve also had the chance to get to know and work with Bill Haslam, the mayor of Knoxville.

I am proud to be a life-long Knoxvillian. My family’s company has been headquartered here for 50 years. My wife, Ginger, and I grew up here, and we’ve raised all four of our children here.

So people all over the state ask me: “Why are you and your family supporting Zach Wamp, and not Bill Haslam, the mayor of your hometown, for governor?”

I am clear and firm in my answer: Based on 20 years of experience, there is no comparison between Wamp and Haslam.

Quite simply, Wamp has the vision, the energy and the leadership abilities we need in our next governor, and Haslam does not.

And though Haslam is one of the nicest fellas you’d ever want to meet, the plain truth is that his record of performance, both in the private sector and in public office, does not measure up.

The leader we need is Zach Wamp.

I base this conclusion on three vital factors: Consistent, reliable conservative values and a philosophy of limited government, low taxes, free markets, and individual liberties; proven, accomplished leadership in the critical area of economic development – how to attract capital investment and create new jobs for our state; demonstrated commitment to truthfulness, transparency and full disclosure to the people whose trust he seeks to earn.

In all these areas, the mayor of Knoxville’s tenure has been disappointing.

As soon as Bill Haslam was elected mayor, his very first order of business was to pass the largest property tax increase in our city’s history. Not exactly a conservative’s approach.

Many of us who had hoped he would bring his family’s business acumen to his office were sorely disappointed.

In the critical area of economic development, during his six years as mayor Haslam’s record is anemic. His “crown jewel” is a taxpayer subsidized movie theater downtown – a movie theater!

But perhaps raising the greatest concerns, as mayor Haslam has steadfastly refused to comply with decades of common practice in his financial disclosures, choosing instead to meet only the bare legal minimums, with the greatest possible vagueness and difficulty of public access.

We are seeing the same attitude now in his incomplete, customized financial disclosures as a candidate for the highest office in our state. He refuses to do what our last four governors have all done, both Republican and Democrat – Openly and completely disclose to the voters the sources and extent of his financial interests, so that the voters can determine if there are any conflicts.

But Bill Haslam refuses to do this.

That is not the kind of leadership we are looking for in our next governor.

My family and I are so strongly supporting Zach Wamp.

He is the right man, with the right values, and the right solutions for these tough times.

And that is why Zach Wamp will make us proud as Tennessee’s next great governor!

Tennessee Firearms and Sportsmen Community backs Zach Wamp for governor

Posted Tuesday, July 27th, 2010 by tnurn

NASHVILLE – On the heels of a major endorsement from Tennessee gun rights advocate Ronnie Barrett, CEO of Barrett Firearms, Republican Zach Wamp announced today additional support from grassroots leaders in the sportsmen and 2nd Amendment community in his bid for governor.

More than 30 hunting, fishing and firearms advocates representing Tennessee’s three grand divisions have publicly endorsed Zach’s bid for governor, highlighting his lifelong commitment to the 2nd Amendment and the state’s hunting and fishing heritage while acknowledging the need for a strong conservative governor who will actively protect the sporting rights cherished by so many Tennesseans.

“I have enjoyed a tremendous amount of support from gun owners and sportsmen throughout this campaign,” said Wamp. “We are leading in the rural areas of the state and much of that support comes from those who are familiar with my strong commitment to hunting, fishing and the 2nd Amendment. As governor, I will protect and nurture these rights from day one.”

As a member of Congress Zach has proudly and consistently supported Tennesseans’ right to own and bear arms while protecting the important traditions of hunting and fishing. Zach opposed the United Nations’ taxation on firearms, protected Tennesseans’ rights to defend themselves and supports an amendment to the state constitution that guarantees Tennesseans’ right to hunt and fish.

“I agree wholeheartedly with what Ronnie Barrett said two weeks ago. Zach Wamp has stood strong with us to protect and defend our 2nd Amendment rights,” said David Waldrip, a longtime 2nd Amendment grassroots activist and resident of Shelby County.

“We must make sure that our next Governor understands, supports and defends our rights under the constitution. Zach Wamp is that man, and I encourage my fellow gun owners, carry permit holders and sportsmen to follow Ronnie Barrett’s example and join me in supporting Zach Wamp for governor. ”

Minuteman Founder Endorses Zach Wamp

Only Candidate with Proven Record on Ending Illegal Immigration and Enforcing Border Security

Aliso Viejo, CA – Minuteman Project Founder and President Jim Gilchrist, the nation’s leading grassroots activist on the issue of immigration reform and border security, announced today that he is endorsing Congressman Zach Wamp in his bid for Governor of Tennessee. Gilchrist cited Wamp’s strong record on securing our borders, denying illegals any form of amnesty, and cracking down on taxpayer funded benefits that attract illegals to the United States. Polls show that immigration reform and border security remains one of the top issues facing voters of the state of Tennessee in the upcoming August 5 Republican Primary.

Gilchrist stated, “Instead of politicians who like to talk about illegal immigration without actually having a record of acting to end this problem, America needs real leaders like Zach Wamp to implement Arizona style laws in states like Tennessee. With his strong track record of calling for the Federal Government to enforce our laws and secure our borders, Zach Wamp is the only candidate who truly has a committed stand on the issues of immigration reform and border security. We need Zach Wamp as Governor of Tennessee to end the chaos of illegal immigration.”

Regarding the August 5 Republican Primary Gilchrist said, “For too long law abiding Americans have grown tired of watching the political establishment lack the will to enforce our nation’s laws when it comes to border security and immigration policy. For over 15 years Zach Wamp has earned the strongest record of any member of the Tennessee Congressional Delegation on this issue and has proven he will fight that same status quo establishment. Tennessee needs someone in Nashville that will fight on behalf of taxpayers to end the influx of illegal aliens in America and that is why I wholeheartedly endorse Zach Wamp for Governor of Tennessee.”

Jim Gilchrist founded the multi-ethnic Minuteman Project on Oct. 1, 2004, after years of frustrated efforts trying to get a neglectful U.S. government to simply enforce existing immigration laws. Called “the world’s largest neighborhood watch”, their volunteer members aid efforts of the US Border Patrol by watching for illegal activity along the US-Mexican border.

Chattanooga Free Press Endorses Zach for Governor

Posted Monday, July 19th, 2010 by Zach Wamp for Governor

The next governor of Tennessee will face many challenges as he wrestles with an economy that is in recession. He must be vigorous in encouraging major new industrial and business enterprises to keep our people’s job opportunities and economy strong. He should improve education. He must lead in a variety of state responsibilities — without a tax increase!

Rep. Wamp has been effective in boosting Tennessee’s business and industrial growth, while advocating improved educational opportunities. He has given attention to Tennessee interests while he has served the whole nation well and conservatively in Congress.

He has a “20/20 Vision” plan that includes health improvements, while controlling costs for families and individuals.

He insists there be “no state income tax.” (Fortunately, Mayor Haslam and Speaker Ramsey share that view.)

Rep. Wamp believes in firm law enforcement and strong action against the invasion of our country by illegal aliens.

He is a reliable supporter of Tennessee’s sound Right-to-Work law.

Rep. Wamp has worked to preserve Moccasin Bend, advance business and science and energy work in this district, and to improve our vital Chickamauga Dam lock. He has worked to promote the historic Trail of Tears recognition. He is for sound tax-and-spend conservatism.

We know of no issue on which Rep. Wamp’s political positions are not constructive. His conservative views should be popular and beneficial for all Tennesseans.

We are fortunate to have such a fine array of candidates for governor in Congressman Wamp, Mayor Haslam and Speaker Ramsey. We believe Rep. Wamp’s extensive experience in Washington on so many issues and his sound principles recommend him for nomination for governor Aug. 5 — and overwhelming election in November.

Ronnie Barrett Endorses Zach Wamp for Governor

Posted Thursday, July 8th, 2010 by Zach Wamp for Governor

NASHVILLE – Ronnie Barrett, well-known Tennessee gun rights advocate and the CEO of Barrett Firearms, today endorsed Zach Wamp for Governor.

Barrett started Barrett Firearms 28 years ago, and he has become a revered icon in the world of firearms manufacturing, and staunch defender of the second amendment.

“Whenever Tennessee sportsmen and gun owners needed a friend in Congress, Zach Wamp stood strong with us to protect and defend our 2nd Amendment rights, that’s why he’s always received an A rating from the National Rifle Association” said Barrett. “We need that same strong backbone and consistent support from our next Governor, and I’m convinced that Zach Wamp will be that man. I strongly encourage all Tennessee sportsmen and gun owners to support Zach Wamp for Governor.”

Headquartered in Murfreesboro, Barrett Firearms is the world leader in large-caliber rifle design and manufacturing. Their products are used by civilian sport shooters, law enforcement agencies. The United States military adopted the Barrett .50 caliber rifle as well as more than 50 American allied countries across the world and has been an important weapon for our fighting troops.

“I am honored to have Ronnie Barrett join our campaign for Governor,” said Wamp. “Ronnie and Barrett Firearms are a true Tennessee success stories and his endorsement is more proof of our campaign’s momentum. As Governor, I will continue my long, consistent record of fighting to protect the 2nd Amendment rights for law-abiding citizens and sportsmen.”
In February, Barrett was honored by NRA Publications with the Golden Bullseye Pioneer Award. Ronnie is a past recipient of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year, and has been recognized by both Inc. Magazine and Business Tennessee Magazine as a top entrepreneurial company. The United States Army in 2004 named the Barrett M107 as “One of the Top 10 Greatest Inventions”. The first time in history any firearm had made the list.

Ronnie has been featured on shows like 60 Minutes, Paula Zaun, Dateline, Discovery channel, History channel and Military Channel and many others. His rifles are seen in major motion pictures as well as depicted in the top rated action video games in America.

Clarksville Now: Gubernatorial Hopeful Zach Wamp Visits Clarksville

Posted Tuesday, June 29th, 2010 by Zach Wamp for Governor

By Steven Willis
Clarksville Now

Congressman for the third congressional district of Tennessee and Gubernatorial hopeful Zach Wamp attended a fundraising dinner at the home of Jill T. Crow on Madison Street Tuesday night.

Returning to Clarksville after a long and active campaign across the state, Congressman Wamp met Mrs. Crow with a warm embrace and thanks for opening her home to his campaign. Wamp spoke with Clarksvillenow.com briefly before attending to the many arriving supporters.

He discussed his excitement about the growing energy Tennesseans have developed for the gubernatorial election. The Congressman went into a thorough explanation of his 20/20 Vision for the state and the four main points he believes are key to ensuring the economic future of Tennessee.

Representative Wamp’s primary points were a focus on jobs and economy. Citing his success with developments in new job creation within his district, Wamp was quick to point out that he believed the state suffered from a “great divide between rural and urban economy.” The Congressman’s plan included upgrading the state’s infrastructure with an attention on broadband connectivity across the state as well as development of roads and better mass transport systems.

The Congressman spoke with intensity when explaining his plan to address education in Tennessee, the third point of his four point vision. He believes that the focus on reading should be redirected to kindergarten in all schools. A student should be benchmarked upon entering schools and those children that were behind in reading skills would receive more direct attention in the first year.

“The most important first step we can take to improve public education in our state, which is a must to create jobs of the future, is early childhood reading.” Candidate Wamp said.

The Congressman gave a brief overview of his position on the fourth point of his 20/20 Vision plan, healthcare. Representative Wamp expressed his concern of how the physical health of Tennessee children would inevitably affect quality of life and productivity of future generations in the state. His goal is to develop a more comprehensive preventative health plan for the state.

Mountain Press: Wamp: Race intensifies with finish line in sight

Posted Tuesday, June 29th, 2010 by Zach Wamp for Governor

By Jeff Farrell
Mountain Press

Congressman Zach Wamp says interest in the gubernatorial primary is growing even as he and the other candidates are entering the final legs of the campaign to win the Republican nomination to be governor of Tennessee.

Wamp has been the representative for the third congressional district of Tennessee since 1994, but is seeking the GOP nod in the gubernatorial race, along with Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam and Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey.

In an interview at The Mountain Press office on Tuesday, Wamp said he’s seen growing interest in the campaign, including at a debate earlier this week in Johnson City.

“Over 400 people came in the middle of the afternoon on a Monday so that was evidence to me that people are really keying in on the choices,” he said.

One of the major new issues that has arisen in recent months centers around a law from another state, he said. Arizona’s new law on illegal immigration has been a major topic among voters.

Wamp said he supports initiatives to pass a similar law in Tennessee; the statute would allow Tennessee law enforcement officers to detain and remove people who are discovered to be in the country illegally.

“All Arizona has done is pass a statute saying people in this country illegally can be removed by the state if the federal government doesn’t do their job,” he said.

He also supports efforts to bring e-Verify to Tennessee; the software allows for comparison of employment eligibility verification forms to the federal government’s database to verify employees aren’t using false identification.

“I’m all for enforcing (immigration laws), but I’m not for some massive federal bur to come raiding businesses when we can do this with technology,” he said.

Nashville Examiner: Wamp exuding confidence

Posted Tuesday, June 1st, 2010 by Zach Wamp for Governor

By Mike Morrow
Nashville Examiner

Zach Wamp was in a noticeably confident mood about his campaign for governor Saturday at a Republican event in Franklin.

He mentioned that his “numbers are really strong,” which of course prompted a request for the numbers, and Wamp wasn’t giving.

But the 3rd District congressman sounded either especially self-assured or he was putting on an excellent act. He sounded particularly pleased with new TV advertisements coming in June.

“I could not be more encouraged right now than the position we have,” Wamp said. “All across the state, our numbers are really strong. The television campaign Tennesseans are going to see from me in June is compelling, positive and all about the future of our state. I’m real excited about the next 48 days.”

There are 48 days before early voting begins for the Aug. 5 primary. There are 68 days until the primary itself.

Wamp is running in the primary against Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam, Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey of Blountville and marketing consultant Joe Kirkpatrick of Wilson County.

“I’m really encouraged with the kind of momentum we see on the ground for my campaign and of course Republicans across the board. It’s going to be a tremendous year for our party,” Wamp said.

But Wamp knows political reality, and reality is that statewide politics can be hardball politics when the day to vote nears if the race is tight. It’s a time when people are on the lookout for sharp attacks and negative ads. It is also the time when many people who haven’t paid much attention to the campaign make fairly quick decisions based on what they see just before an election.

The general assumption in the governor’s race has been that Haslam has the edge, based on organization and funding, which has topped $7 million in contributions. All of the contenders claim to be conservative. The race has been defined very much by geography, since the three most prominent contenders — Haslam, Wamp and Ramsey — are from East Tennessee. While each is trying to eat away as much of the base of the other two, the race may be won in the Republican rich suburbs of Memphis and Nashville.

“It gets tough as you go down the stretch, because we’ve got good people running and everybody’s going to have their points to make,” Wamp said.

“I really am at peace about the outcome of this race, and I feel very confident, because we have the people with us. It’s going to be a great finish to this campaign, and then we’ve got to unify everybody and get ready for November.”

Zach and Volkswagen CEO see more production jobs for Tennessee

Posted Thursday, May 27th, 2010 by Zach Wamp for Governor

WASHINGTON – Zach Wamp, Republican candidate for Governor, was joined today by Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO of Volkswagen of America, to talk about Volkswagen’s new auto assembly plant in Chattanooga and Wamp’s plans to launch a new “production agenda” as Tennessee’s next governor to move the state from third to first in automotive manufacturing.

Wamp and Jacoby were the featured speakers at this morning’s closing session of the Tennessee Valley Corridor National Technology Summit in Washington, D.C.

Jacoby outlined Volkswagen’s $1 billion investment in its new manufacturing plant in Tennessee that is expected to create more than 11,000 new jobs in the state. Jacoby said the plant would open soon with new mid-size sedans rolling off the Chattanooga assembly line early next year.

Wamp saluted Volkswagen and many other manufacturers that have recently invested in communities large and small throughout his East Tennessee congressional district, including Wacker Chemie, Alstom and Confluence Solar.

“As governor, I will create a strong new production agenda for Tennessee with a major focus on automotive manufacturing and related industries to create thousands of new jobs,” Wamp said. “Because for every job we can create in Tennessee to make it, build it or grow it, we can then create seven or eight more service, support and small business jobs. A strong new production agenda is priority one to help more Tennessee families and communities in every county in our state.”

During the Tennessee Valley Corridor event, Wamp was joined by hundreds of business, education and economic leaders from across the Tennessee Valley, as well as U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, U.S. Sens. Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker and U.S. Reps. John Duncan, Lincoln Davis, Bart Gordon, Heath Shuler and Phil Roe for discussions on energy innovation, advanced transportation, education and workforce development and national security during the nonprofit organization’s 23rd summit meeting since Wamp formed the Corridor in 1995.

Wamp’s 20/20 Vision For an Even Better Tennessee includes plans for job creation in the critical areas of manufacturing, defense, information technology, health care services, agri-business, engineering, transportation and the rapidly expanding bio-fuel and energy sectors.

As governor, Wamp intends to leverage the state’s existing strengths and its growing base of automobile manufacturing and related industries to aid the development and recruitment of more high-tech jobs and create powerful new economic engines in every region of the state.

Nashville Examiner: Wamp offers a reading reminder

Posted Tuesday, May 25th, 2010 by Zach Wamp for Governor

By Mike Morrow
Nashville Examiner

You can tell Zach Wamp doesn’t really want to be a party pooper on the subject.

But it has become clear in Wamp’s campaign appearances recently that he’s heard a little too much about Tennessee’s victory in the Race to the Top competition, simply because everyone is missing what Wamp believes is a fundamental priority.

“You can talk about Race to the Top and the Tennessee Diploma Project, but let me tell you, unless we improve early childhood reading, that’s not going to work,” Wamp, a Republican candidate for governor, said. “You can raise standards for 8th grade teachers, but if 40 percent of their students are reading at 4th grade levels or lower, they’re not going to meet those standards.”

The issue strikes at the core of one of Wamp’s major campaign themes. He has been relentless in emphasizing the need to know if children read well enough by the time they get to the third grade. If not, he warns, that student might lose out.

Wamp does not criticize Race to the Top or the Tennessee Diploma Project. He is making the point that without attention to early childhood reading, those big-concept programs don’t stand as much chance of success as they might otherwise.
